California Climate Credit Provides Summer Bill Relief for SDG&E Customers

Eligible San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) customers are receiving a second $49.36 electric California Climate Credit this month, following an initial credit in August. The credits are automatically applied to customers’ bills and provide relief during a period when summer temperatures can drive higher energy use. This year, the statewide program’s electric credits were shifted from their traditional spring and fall schedule to August and September to better support customers during the summer months.

“August brought several stretches of hot, humid weather across our region, including record-warm overnight temperatures in some communities,” said Dana Golan, chief customer officer for SDG&E. “We know higher energy use during hot weather can add pressure to household budgets. That's why we advocated for these credits to be delivered when customers need them most. The second credit provides continued, meaningful rate relief as customers manage higher summer energy costs.”

Eligible customers should look for the California Climate Credit line item on the bill associated with their September billing cycle.

All eligible residential electric customers, including those served by Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) programs or living in multi-unit properties with shared meters, are receiving a second electric Climate Credit this year following a credit in August. Eligible residential natural gas customers received a $32.58 Climate Credit in April. Beginning in 2027, natural gas Climate Credits will be issued in February to better align with winter heating usage.

Small business customers will continue receiving their electric California Climate Credit on their existing schedule in April and October.

What is the California Climate Credit?

The California Climate Credit is funded through California’s Cap-and-Invest Program, which requires polluters to pay for the greenhouse gas emissions they produce. Utilities distribute these funds to customers as bill credits to help offset energy costs. Learn more at cpuc.ca.gov/climatecredit.

Additional bill relief

Along with the two electric Climate Credits, customers are continuing to see added bill relief from recent rate changes, including an electric decrease that took effect in June, a natural gas decrease in July and another in August. Together, these changes have reduced residential monthly bills by about $6 for customers who receive electricity from another provider and use SDG&E for energy delivery1 or $9 for those who also have natural gas service2.
