When power outages or emergencies happen, preparation can make a big difference, especially for communities in higher-risk areas.
At a recent regional summit, tribal leaders, emergency officials and SDG&E experts came together to talk through real-world scenarios, including wildfire response, Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) and extended outages. Discussions focused on practical priorities that affect communities before, during and after an emergency:
• Access to information and resources
• Planning ahead for outages
• Maintaining critical services during disruptions
Participants also discussed ways to improve coordination between SDG&E, first responders and local leaders, including how to share information and respond more effectively during emergencies.
A key part of the conversation included energy solutions that can support communities during outages, such as:
• Backup power for essential facilities
• Microgrids and battery storage
• Infrastructure designed to better withstand extreme weather
These types of solutions can help reduce disruptions and support continuity of services when the grid is impacted. The summit also included discussion of longer-term energy planning, including how communities can develop and manage local energy resources.
