Beat the heat with countywide Cool Zones

Looking to escape the summer heat this holiday weekend? Consider visiting one of San Diego County’s Cool Zones. These designated locations, including libraries and community centers, offer free air-conditioned spaces for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and anyone seeking relief from extreme temperatures. By utilizing Cool Zones, residents can reduce their individual utility usage and contribute to energy conservation throughout the community.

The Cool Zone program was established out of concern for seniors, people with disabilities, and those whose health could be adversely affected by high temperatures. Managed by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), Cool Zones provide a vital respite during hot weather.

For San Diego County residents who do not have access to transportation to reach a Cool Zone, assistance is available. Older adults, people with disabilities, and homebound individuals can call 211 to connect with a free transportation or rideshare service.

In addition to visiting Cool Zones, here are some practical tips to beat the heat:

  • Slow down: Be most physically active during the coolest part of the day and pace yourself during physical activities.
  • Stay indoors: If you’re not using air conditioning, stay on the lowest floor. Keep shades down and blinds closed but leave windows slightly open.
  • Use fans wisely: Electric fans don’t cool the air, but they help sweat evaporate, which cools your body.
  • Cool off: Take a refreshing shower, bath, or sponge bath.
  • Avoid using the oven: Cooking appliances generate heat indoors.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to reflect the sun’s heat.
  • Air out hot cars: Before getting into a parked car, open the windows to release trapped heat.
  • Never leave children or pets in vehicles: Even with cracked windows, temperatures inside a car can become lethal.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink more fluids than usual, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Stay cool and safe during the summer heat!
