Good news for August and September energy bills for residential customers who have electric service with SDG&E. When you view your August and September bills, you’ll see a line item under the electricity section called the California Climate Credit for $32.28.
There is no action required to receive this credit; all residential customers, including community choice aggregation customers, will automatically receive this credit from SDG&E.
What is the California Climate Credit?
The California Climate Credit is part of California’s efforts to fight climate change. This credit is from a state program that requires power plants, natural gas providers, and other large industries that emit greenhouse gases to buy carbon pollution permits. The credit on your bill is your share of the payments from the State's program.
Residential customers with natural gas service received their natural gas credit in April, and the credits for electricity will be received in August and September. This schedule applies to both 2020 and 2021, in contrast to previous years when both credits were offered in April and October.
Below is the breakdown of the bill credit amounts. Natural gas-only customers will receive only the gas bill credit; likewise, electric-only customers will receive only the electric credit.
- $21.11 = April natural gas credit
- $32.28 = August electric credit
- $32.28 = September electric credit
Given the impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19), we recognize this is a difficult time for our customers. Please know that changing the distribution months does not change the total value of the climate credits you receive for the year. The shift will provide bill relief for customers and reduce bill volatility.
