Conservation needed as heat continues

Due to the prolonged heat wave and exceptionally high demand for electricity, the California Independent System Operator (ISO), which manages the state’s electric power grid, is continuing the statewide Flex Alert through Labor Day Weekend and has warned consumers to be prepared for rotating outages to be called from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Energy conservation is essential in helping reduce the possibility of widespread rotating outages and the number of people impacted. Understandably, it may be difficult to reduce energy use during the high temperatures and the ongoing pandemic. However, everyone is urged to do their part to cut back on energy use, if health and safety permits, during this critical time.

Helpful actions during the emergency include turning off air conditioners, avoiding the use of appliances, such as dishwashers, clothes washers, and dryers, switching off unnecessary lighting and delaying pool pump filtering and electric vehicle charging. The Valley Fire near Alpine has also impacted SDG&E equipment and caused power outages in the vicinity of the fire. We are coordinating closely with CalFire and our crews will work to quickly restore power once CalFire determines it is safe to do so. Other unplanned outages likely due to weather have also affected many customers. We appreciate everyone’s patience as our crews continue to work in challenging conditions to restore power safely as soon as possible. SDG&E’s Emergency Operations Center remains activated and is closely monitoring the situation.
