EarthFair at Balboa Park to Feature Electric Cars

Electric cars will have a big presence at the 2019 EarthFair at Balboa Park – the largest free environmental fair of its kind – taking place this Sunday at Balboa Park.

There are two places at the festival where you can stop by to learn about low or zero-emission vehicles.

The Cleaner Car Concourse at the Pan American Plaza (near the old Hall of Champions) is where you can go and talk to people who have already made the switch to driving a fully electric vehicle (EV), plug-in hybrid or other alternative-fueled vehicles. Enthusiasts from the Electric Vehicle Association of San Diego will be there to answer questions.

Stop by the fountain area in Plaza de Panama, if you are interested in checking out the latest models of EVs, talk to dealers, and learn about incentives for buying an EV and EV charging pricing plans. Our Clean Transportation Team will have a booth there to answer your questions.

With rising gas prices, now is the time to explore EVs. Driving a plug-in electric vehicle and enrolling in an EV pricing plan can help you money.

Under our newest pricing plan, called EV-TOU 5, you can charge your car for 9 cents per kilowatt hour during super off-peak hours of midnight to 6 a.m. on weekdays, and midnight to 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays. This plan comes with a monthly service fee of $16, but it does not require you to get a separate meter for your electric vehicle.

It’s easy to program an electric car to charge during the lowest-cost hours.

About the EarthFair

This is the 30th annual EarthFair. Over 60,000 people are expected to attend the event. Produced by 300 volunteers, EarthFair 2019 will feature more than 300 exhibitors, special theme areas, a food pavilion, a children's activity area, four entertainment venues, a parade and an arts and crafts show.

Dozens of environmental nonprofit organizations, including many of our Environmental Champions grantees, will have booths there. For example, Ocean Connectors, San Diego Canyonlands and Art FORM San Diego. These nonprofits have great programs and volunteering opportunities.

The Earth Day Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. by the Spanish Village and marches through Balboa Park to the children's area in the Pan American Plaza. Participants are invited to dress up as endangered species and present their favorite earth-friendly messages.
