Heat Wave Drives Record Electricity Demand

Peak Demand of More than 5,000 Megawatts Shatters Previous Record in SDG&E’s Service Territory Set in 2014

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 9, 2024 — San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) customer demand for electricity has soared across the region as an intense heat wave gripped Southern California.

The multi-day heat event brought record-breaking temperatures on Sunday, and record-breaking peak energy demand, which reached 5,032 megawatts at 6:45 p.m. within SDG&E’s service area. The previous record was set on September 16, 2014, when the region used 4,890 megawatts that day.

That demand coupled with extreme heat resulted in several unplanned outages across the area. While the cause of those outages remain under investigation, SDG&E crews reported the heat was a contributing factor.

“We understand how challenging it is to be without power during these extreme temperatures, and we deeply appreciate your patience and understanding,” said Dana Golan, SDG&E’s vice president of customer services. “Our dedicated field crews have been working non-stop to restore power as quickly and safely as possible and will continue to do so until everyone is fully restored.”

Unplanned outages can happen during heatwaves, which is why it is important to be prepared. Customers are reminded to have an emergency plan in place, including ensuing electronic devices are charged, battery-powered flashlights/lanterns are close by (don’t use candles), and vehicles have at least a quarter tank of gas.

SDG&E offers the following tips, resources and solutions to help customers find smart ways to reduce their energy and save money:

  • Find a Cool Zone. Help senior citizens and people with special needs comfortably escape mid-day summer heat and reduce their air-conditioning use, which helps save on energy costs. Find the nearest Cool Zone here

  • Use a ceiling or portable fan instead of your air conditioner if possible.

  • Run your A/C early in the morning to pre-cool your home. Close blinds, shades, or drapes to block out the sun's heat.

  • Run major appliances early in the morning or late at night.

  • Unplug TV, cable, DVD, or gaming devices when idle, or use a smart power strip to eliminate phantom power.
