About 2,300 students from local schools got a big dose of inspiration to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) last week, when they visited Fleet Week San Diego’s Innovation Zone.
Our company, along with other local companies, hosted booths and interactive activities featuring robots, drones, and virtual reality demonstrations at the Innovation Zone. SDG&E engineers and IT professionals served as STEM ambassadors, answering students’ questions about careers in the energy industry.
Students were bussed in for Student STEM Days at Fleet Week San Diego last Thursday and Friday, with funding provided by SDG&E.
We are proud to help sponsor Fleet Week San Diego, showing support for our local community of Navy, Marines and Coast Guard service members. San Diego is homeport to 57 U.S. Navy ships and 3 major Marine Corps installations. Our region also maintains a congressional designation as the largest Official Coast Guard City.
Deep Military Roots
After completing their service, many veterans choose to stay in San Diego, contributing their talent and leadership skills to the local workforce. Veterans comprise about 10 percent of SDG&E’s diverse workforce.
“San Diego is a military town. In fact, with 143,000 active military personnel, the San Diego region has the largest concentration of military in the world,” said Joe Pierzina, manager of federal accounts at SDG&E.
“Fleet Week provides an opportunity to honor and celebrate the Navy, Marine and Coast Guard men and women who are also friends and neighbors woven into the fabric of this great city.”
