Leveraging Technology and Innovations to Stay Ahead of the Storm

Editor’s Note: Utility Dive and PA Consulting recently published an industry playbook called “Staying Ahead of the Storm” to highlight best practices in the utility industry to address and mitigate risks posed by increasingly severe weather events, such as wildfires. SDG&E was one of two energy companies featured in the playbook. A summary of the playbook is provided below courtesy of PA Consulting. Staying ahead of the storm - Utility reliability and resilience planning

Thanks to climate change, the future promises more (and more severe) wildfires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and other extreme weather events. Utilities around the world are racing to upgrade their grids for greater reliability and resilience in the face of this “new normal.”

Capital investments that utilities make today for technology, hardening and protecting assets, and for increasing power system flexibility and recovery capabilities, will determine how quickly and well utilities respond to natural disasters.
