New Trees Planted in Kate Sessions Park to Celebrate the Horticulturalist’s 162nd Birthday

Today is the 162nd birthday of San Diego’s most famous horticulturalist, Kate Sessions, who is credited with creating Balboa Park. In her honor, our president, Scott Drury, joined San Diego City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, school children, and community residents to plant new trees in Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach.

Hosted by Councilmember Campbell, the event celebrated Sessions’ remarkable life and contributions. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Sessions was an influential figure in the City of San Diego, helping secure land and trees for what is now Balboa Park and Kate Sessions Park.

Building on her legacy, local elementary school students, community volunteers, City of San Diego Parks and Recreation staff and our Vegetation Management team worked together to plant multiple tree species, including Torrey Pine and Jacaranda.

Attendees of the festivities enjoyed cake and were given a free tree sapling to plant in their own garden. Our vegetation management experts were on hand to provide tree planting tips and share information about the importance of planting the right tree, in the right place.

As part of our commitment to protect and enhance the environment, our company takes part in multiple charitable initiatives to help plant and fund tree planting in our region, and to help educate our youth on the important role trees play in our ecosystem. Trees are not only beautiful, they also help improve air quality and fight climate change by absorbing greenhouse gas emissions.
