If your New Year’s resolution involves not just eating clean, but also driving clean, there is good news. It’s become easier than ever to drive electric because of the growing network of public and private electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in our region.
The San Diego and South Orange County region is now home to about 1,500 public charging stations, including about 160 DC fast chargers. The number of Level 2 public chargers in our region has increased by about 17.5 percent between 2017 and 2018, and the number of fast chargers (including Tesla superchargers) has increased by about 35 percent, according to statistics compiled by our clean transportation team.
Different Levels of Public Charging
Public charging stations generally provide power at 240 volt (Level 2) or 480 volt (DC fast charging).
- Level 2 charging provides up to 10-20 miles of range per hour of charging.
- DC Fast chargers provide about 50 miles for every 15 minutes of charging.
Tesla is also working to expand its network of urban superchargers and destination chargers in the San Diego region. Currently, there are two Tesla supercharging locations in San Diego County: one at Qualcomm in the Sorrento Valley area and one at the 6th Avenue and A Street parking garage in downtown San Diego. According to Tesla’s online interactive map, it has plans to add chargers more chargers throughout San Diego County, including Mission Valley/Fashion Valley, San Ysidro, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Del Mar, and Escondido. Construction of Tesla chargers is now underway in Fashion Valley, as well as the Target parking lot in the Del Sur area of San Diego.
Power Your Drive Charging Stations
As part of our Power Your Drive program, we have also added more than 2,800 chargers to workplaces, apartments, and condo complexes in our region. These chargers are Level 2 chargers, hosted by private property owners and are dedicated for the use of tenants at those facilities.
Among those getting chargers through the Power Your Drive program are local municipal facilities, including City Halls, to enable local cities to adopt electric fleets or municipal employees to make the switch to driving electric. Construction is currently underway to add 10 chargers to the City of La Mesa’s City Hall parking lot for use by city employees.
