This Friday, April 29 marks the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of one of SDG&E’s favorite things – trees! Beyond creating beautiful spaces throughout our region, trees also help clean the air, conserve water and create a cleaner, greener future for our communities. Those are just some of the reasons why SDG&E has made a commitment to support the planting of 10,000 trees annually in collaboration with many sustainability-minded entities, including cities, schools, and community organizations. Recent tree planting and tree education events have taken SDG&E everywhere from Tijuana River Valley to Borrego Springs to Campo and many other areas.
This year, SDG&E is proud to celebrate our 20th consecutive year of earning the Arbor Day Foundation’s distinction as a Tree Line USA® Utility. Tree Line USA is a national program recognizing public and private utilities for practices that protect and enhance America's urban forests. SDG&E earned this acknowledgment thanks to the great work of our Vegetation Management team who works tirelessly to care for more than 460,000 trees in our service territory.
Learn more about our work to plant and care for the right trees in the right places throughout our region in the video below. You can also find ways to celebrate Arbor Day with Team SDG&E by browsing the photos and events below that showcase our employees planting trees in their neighborhoods to expand and enhance our regional tree canopy and present opportunities for our customers to get involved as well.
Chula Vista Arbor Day – SDG&E and the City of Chula Vista will come together to plant 171 trees throughout the community. SDG&E and the City of Chula Vista have been collaborating on Arbor Day events for more than a decade. This year, SDG&E has donated all of the trees that will be planted at the event.
Grow Urban Downtown – The Downtown San Diego Partnership, Tree San Diego and Urban Interventions will complete a month-long tree-planting spree throughout downtown San Diego. The Grow Urban program, launched several years ago by the Downtown Partnership and Urban Interventions, seeks to replace all of the missing street trees in the downtown core. SDG&E provides funding support through our Environmental Champions grant program to accelerate the pace of tree planting.
Encinitas Arbor Day – Community members are invited to attend Encinitas Arbor Day this Saturday, April 30, where they can help plant trees at Cottonwood Creek Park, as well as take home their own tree sapling to plant. Various community organizations will be in attendance, including representatives from SDG&E.
