As part of San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) comprehensive safety and wildfire prevention program, drone technology plays a critical role in helping protect the communities we serve from the growing threat of catastrophic wildfires.
Enhancing Wildfire Prevention
SDG&E launched its drone program in 2016 to strengthen our commitment to safety, reliability and affordability. Drones allow us to efficiently and thoroughly inspect our electrical infrastructure, particularly in areas at highest risk for wildfires — these include San Diego’s rural inland valleys, foothills, mountainous regions and the wildland urban interface areas closer to the coast. By flying drones near power lines and equipment, our expert teams can closely assess and document equipment conditions that would otherwise be difficult or hazardous to reach by foot or helicopter. If any damage or potential fire risk is detected, we can prioritize repairs and take immediate action to mitigate hazards, directly supporting our larger safety, wildfire prevention and response strategies.
Minimizing Impact
Using drones is far less intrusive than traditional inspection methods, such as helicopters or ground crews. Drones reduce the need for treacherous hiking and help minimize disturbance to residents and wildlife, all while providing high-quality, close-up imagery that enhances our ability to keep the grid safe and resilient.
Upholding Safety and Privacy Standards
Customer safety and privacy are extremely important to us. All drone operations are carried out by trained SDG&E personnel or contractors following strict safety, security and privacy protocols. Our focus is always on inspecting and maintaining our energy infrastructure.
