"We don't stop when we're tired, we stop when we're done."
On International Firefighters Day we recognize the invaluable contributions that our local firefighters and emergency response professionals have made to protect our communities.
Over the years, we have proudly supported partnerships that prioritize the safety of our region and make our local workforce more diverse. We know the importance of properly equipping first responders with emergency preparedness, response, and recovery planning.
Recently, we had the opportunity to celebrate graduates of the Miramar Fire Academy Class 11. Thirty-one cadets received their certificates from the San Diego Miramar College Accredited Regional Training program, giving them the skills and certifications needed to be hired on as firefighters in San Diego and across the nation, many of whom have received support from SDG&E to complete their certifications, alleviating out-of-pocket costs for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
The scholarships awarded by SDG&E ensure that low-income and underserved individuals pursuing State Fire Training have all the resources necessary to succeed. The impact of removing these access barriers will make our communities safer, place diverse perspectives in essential service-work, and provide means for diverse populations to create generational wealth. The graduates have successfully completed the necessary requirements for certification within the state and will also receive their associate degrees.
The Miramar Fire Academy has trained first responders for their careers in public safety since the 1960’s. The knowledge that our future safety professionals gain at the Miramar Fire Academy follows them throughout their careers. They strongly believe in their highly qualified candidates and continue to foster relationships from recruitment to retirement.
Thank you to the dedicated firefighters of our future who have chosen this path and to those that have served to date!
