Residents in Valley Center and surrounding communities are invited to attend a Wildfire Safety Fair tomorrow at Valley Center Middle School to learn about emergency preparedness and public safety power shutoffs, while enjoying free ice cream.
Scheduled for 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., the Valley Center event is the first of three Wildfire Safety Fairs organized by SDG&E. Attendees will learn about what our company is doing to help keep the community safe as the peak fire season approaches. They will receive information about stocking an emergency kit, developing an emergency plan and designing or modifying the space around their home to help resist wildfire.
A limited quantity of emergency kit backpacks will be given out at each Wildfire Safety Fair. The backpacks contain medical grade face masks, water pouches, bandages, flash light, duct tape, energy bar packs, toilet paper, rain poncho, whistle, light stick, and other items.
Hear from wildfire safety and resilience experts
At the Valley Center fair, Joe Napier, Valley Center Fire Department Chief, will give a presentation on how to create defensible space around your home to reduce fire risk. Also speaking at the event will be Sandra Younger, a 2003 Cedar Fire survivor and author of The Fire Outside My Window. Younger works with disaster survivors and is a frequent speaker on the topic of resilience and transforming disasters into opportunities.
SDG&E’s fire science and climate adaptation staff will also be at the event, giving a presentation on how we use the latest technologies to forecast and monitor extreme weather and fire conditions. They will share information and answer question about how public safety power shutoffs are used as a last resort to prevent catastrophic wildfires.
