Right now, tens of thousands of parents with children across San Diego County have lost their jobs and are struggling to put food on the table. In May, the local unemployment rate skyrocketed to an all-time high of 30 percent!
To compound this crisis, tens of thousands of children living in poverty rely on free school meals Monday through Friday. However, when school is closed, as it has been and will be for the foreseeable future, these children stop receiving free meals and face hunger at home.
That’s why we've teamed up with the Jacob’s & Cushman San Diego Food Bank to support children and families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic during the School’s Out, Hunger’s Not – COVID-19 Summer Food Drive.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, the San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank food distribution programs have continued to serve those in need. Additionally, the Food Bank has started a COVID-19 Response Fund, enabling these organizations to procure and distribute more food to families and seniors impacted by the pandemic in communities throughout San Diego. SDG&E is a proud sponsor of the fund.
“We have a long and impactful partnership with the Food Bank that has helped thousands of people in need,” said Mitch Mitchell, SDG&E’s vice president of State Governmental Affairs and External Affairs, who is also featured in the Summer Food Drive annual commercials. “I am really proud of our employees who, year after year, volunteer at the San Diego Food Bank or support their programs through payroll deductions.”
