SDG&E Environmental Champions Shareholder-Funded Initiative Offering Grants Ranging from $20,000 to $40,000
SAN DIEGO, March 19, 2024 – San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) announced today that it is accepting grant applications for its Environmental Champions grant program. This grant program, in its 14th year, will provide grant awards to organizations whose projects improve our local environment through habitat restoration or urban greening. Environmental Champions, part of SDG&E’s climate action giving pillar, has invested more than $10M in local, community-based environmental organizations in the last seven years alone.
“For more than a decade, our Environmental Champions initiative has invested in nonprofit organizations who have demonstrated their commitment to community-based environmental education and enhancement,” said SDG&E Vice President of Land & Environmental Services and Chief Sustainability Officer Estela de Llanos. "At SDG&E, we believe that community engagement and collaboration is essential to improving our local environment and enhancing our region.”
To amplify impact, grant awards this year have been increased to a range of $20,000 to $40,000. This shareholder-funded grant initiative supports 501(c)3 non-profit organizations whose programs work to improve our local environment in San Diego County and southern Orange County, with an emphasis on diverse and low-income communities. Last year, 99% of SDG&E’s charitable investments benefited diverse and underserved communities.
“Funding from SDG&E’s Environmental Champions grant program has allowed us to increase our tree planting efforts in some of San Diego’s most underinvested neighborhoods,” said Leona Sublett, President & CEO of San Diego Parks Foundation. “Through this partnership, as well as the support from several other donors, we are making incremental progress toward meeting our City’s Climate Action Plan goals and improving quality of life by planting more than 300 trees in communities like Bay Terraces, Southcrest, Linda Vista and Otay Mesa.”
SDG&E invites qualified organizations to apply for program funding that supports habitat restoration and urban greening initiatives, including tree planting and community gardens. The company encourages collaboration between two or more nonprofit organizations, which will allow smaller, grassroots organizations to receive support through joint grant applications. The application window is open now and closes on April 12, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. PST. Click here to learn more and apply.
