SDG&E Responds to Record Wind Speeds and Wildfire Conditions with Continued Public Safety Power Shutoffs

SAN DIEGO, December 10, 2024 – The second day of extreme wildfire conditions and strongest Santa Ana wind event in years brought wind speeds that approached and, in some cases, exceeding hurricane-strength levels, necessitating SDG&E to execute Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) across its service area to help reduce wildfire risk and protect public safety.

Historic weather and wildfire conditions included:

  • Critically low vegetation moisture due to lack of rain, made more vulnerable by high winds the last 24 hours.
  • Single digit humidity levels across the service area.
  • Wide-spread wind gusts across SDG&E’s service area in excess of 60-70 mph, with several weather monitoring stations reading above 80 mph and one peaking at 95 mph. In several incidents, these weather stations peaked above all-time highs.

SDG&E’s Emergency Operations Center and team of meteorologists continue to monitor high winds and severe wildfire conditions around the clock as the National Weather Service’s Red Flag Warning remains in effect.

The power will remain out as long as high winds pose a safety threat to our communities. SDG&E’s Emergency Operations Center continues to monitor conditions 24/7 and has personnel, pre-staged materials and equipment ready to respond until power has been restored to customers.

Community Resource Centers will remain available for customers impacted by a PSPS. These Centers are equipped with resources such as Wi-Fi, phone and medical device charging, and are open to the public. The most current list of impacted communities as well as Community Resource Center locations and hours can be found at sdge.com/ready.

SDG&E thanks its customers for their patience as it continues to prioritize community safety with these PSPSs.

High winds and other weather conditions also have the potential to lead to unplanned outages throughout the region, which are separate from a PSPS. Customers are encouraged to visit SDG&E’s outage map at sdge.com/outages for unplanned outage details and expected restoration times. Customers should also never approach damaged infrastructure or downed power lines and report them by calling 911 or SDG&E’s call center at 1-800-411-7343.

SDG&E has also partnered with 211 San Diego and Orange County United Way (formerly 211 Orange County) to offer enhanced community resources during a PSPS. 211 is free, confidential, and available to answer customer calls 24/7, in over 200 languages. Customers with hearing impairment can dial 211 or 711 and ask to be connected to 211 at 858-900-1211.
