SDG&E’s Mobile Home Conversion Program extended to continue providing park residents more control of their energy service

Did you know many mobile home parks have a central, master energy meter operated by the park’s manager? This can make it difficult for residents to have access to programs and options for managing their energy service. We’re excited to announce that the state recently approved to extend our Mobilehome Park Utility Conversion Program for an additional ten years. The program provides mobile home residents will receive new, individual, professionally installed gas and electric systems, giving them more control of their energy use through their individual utility service. Since its inception in 2015, nearly 5,000 mobile homes in San Diego and south Orange counties have already been converted. With the extension, approximately 12,000 additional mobile home residents will benefit from the program.

Enhancing safety and service

Replacing the aging, mobile home park-owned energy systems with new, utility-owned systems for qualifying parks increases safety and service reliability for owners, residents and the community. This includes the installation of new electric and gas lines and Smart Meters at individual mobile homes previously served by master meters. In addition to increasing safety and reliability, the conversions also removes a barrier for residents for access for money-saving programs that those under a single master meter cannot qualify for. Now with the program extension, more mobile home residents will be able to access free, energy-efficient home improvements and SDG&E’s MyAccount online portal, which provides tools to easily manage energy usage and bills.

As we continue our role as the stewards of this program, we are proud of our work for safety and reliability, as well as benefitting our customers through collaboration with mobile home residents, park owners, and various inspection authorities. Customer satisfaction is important to us in this process, with the most recent survey showing that 82 percent of residents were either satisfied or very satisfied with the conversions. We look forward to continuing our efforts to provide access to the many programs and services available to SDG&E customers that can help them save money and live more comfortably.
