Team Sempra/SDG&E Lacing Up for the Annual Navy Bay Bridge Walk/Run

The Coronado Bridge will be filled with large crowds of people on Sunday for the Navy’s 33rd Bay Bridge Run/Walk – a fundraiser to benefit the Navy Region Southwest’s fitness, recreation and wellness programs.

Team Sempra/SDG&E will be out in force at the event. We expect about 800 of our employees, their friends and family to take a part in the Sunday walk/run. SDG&E has been a supporter of this event for almost every year since it began in 1986.

Our employees feel a strong connection to active and retired military service members for several reasons. First, we understand the contributions and sacrifices they have made to protect our country, and we appreciate the significant role they play in our regional economy.

In 2018, the military was responsible for $26 billion in direct spending in our region and 340,000 jobs, according to the 2018 San Diego Military Economic Impact Study.

Second, our kinship with the military service members stems from the fact that many former service members are SDG&E employees. About eight percent of our workforce comprises veterans.

Who and what the funds will benefit

The funds raised by the Sunday event will go toward supporting the Navy Region Southwest Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Program, which provides fitness and recreation opportunities at each of our region’s five Navy bases. MWR operates gymnasiums and fitness centers, swimming pools and beaches, free movie theaters, bowling lanes, golf courses, discount ticket offices, marinas, gear rental centers, youth and teen recreation centers, child care centers, food and beverage facilities, and more.

Beyond the bridge run/walk, MWR also organizes fitness and sports competitions, educational activities, military child appreciation events, recreation trips, leisure skill classes, and seasonal celebrations.

Thanks to our employees, family and friends who signed up for the event, Team Sempra/SDG&E has raised over $24,000 for Navy League San Diego Council in support of MWR, which will be met with a $10,000 match from the Sempra Energy Foundation.
