Thank you – Keep conserving!

Thanks in large part to your efforts to conserve energy, California avoided rotating outages yesterday.  We are asking that you keep up the good work as the next few days still present a high risk of rotating outages.

The heatwave is expected to continue until Thursday and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which manages the state’s power grid and directs utilities to initiate rotating outages, has warned that the situation is still critical.  Conservation is essential in helping reduce the possibility of widespread rotating outages and the number of impacted customers.  We’ve included energy-saving tips below as a reminder:

  • Set your air conditioner thermostat a few degrees higher (ideally at 78 degrees or higher) and pre-cool your home before 4 p.m. then close the shades.  If possible, turn off the AC during a power emergency
  • Use large appliances, such as dishwashers, clothes washers, and dryers before 4 p.m. or after 9 p.m.
  • Keep the doors of your refrigerator and freezer closed
  • Switch off all unnecessary lighting (for businesses, turn off advertising signs and display/flood/decorative lighting)
  • Cut down on water use because water pumping/processing requires electricity
  • Don’t charge electric vehicles until the emergency has passed
  • Defer or reduce all non-essential use of commercial and industrial equipment, such as boilers, exhaust fans, reproduction equipment, maintenance and repair equipment, dispensing machines, intercoms, cleaning equipment, circulating pumps and electric chargers.
