On Thursday, September 5, at 12:09 p.m., a fire alarm was reported at SDG&E’s battery storage facility in Escondido. The Escondido Fire Department, Escondido Police Department, Public Works, and safety and environmental crews from SDG&E responded. A fire was confirmed, and the location of the fire was quickly identified in one of the 24 battery storage containers at the site.
The fire was contained to just one storage container. There were no injuries. The fire has remained out and cold since 1 a.m. on Friday, September 6. Close temperature measurements of the unit and the adjacent structures all reflect normal ambient temperatures with no evidence of fire. Water sampling occurred while flowing water was actively cooling adjacent containers. All water samples taken were deemed safe.
The Escondido Fire Department, the Escondido Police Department, the San Diego County Hazardous Materials Division, the San Diego County Health Department, and SDG&E have closely monitored the area's air quality since the start of the incident. Atmospheric monitoring has been constant, and the air quality remains safe.
The health and safety of the community and surrounding areas have been the top priority in responding to this incident. The cooperation of the surrounding businesses has been greatly appreciated.
The City of Escondido will lift all evacuation orders by noon today, Saturday, September 7. Those in the affected area who are registered with Alert San Diego and/or Genasys will receive a notification when they are cleared to repopulate the area.
Over the coming weeks, the Escondido Fire Department and SDG&E will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

El jueves 5 de septiembre, a las 12:09 p.m., se reportó un incendio en las instalaciones de almacenamiento de baterías de SDG&E en Escondido. El Departamento de Bomberos de Escondido, el Departamento de Policía de Escondido, Obras Públicas y los equipos de seguridad y medio ambiente de SDG&E respondieron al incidente. Se confirmó un incendio y se identificó rápidamente la ubicación en uno de los 24 contenedores de almacenamiento de baterías en el lugar.
El incendio se contuvo a un solo contenedor de almacenamiento de energía. No hubo heridos. El incendio ha permanecido apagado y frío desde la 1 a.m. del viernes 6 de septiembre. Los registros de temperatura cercanas de la unidad donde se ubicó el incendio y las estructuras adyacentes reflejan temperaturas normales ambientales sin evidencia de incendio. Tambien se realizaron muestras de agua mientras el agua fluía activamente enfriando los contenedores adyacentes. Todas las muestras de agua tomadas en el sitio fueron consideradas seguras.
El Departamento de Bomberos de Escondido, el Departamento de Policía de Escondido, la División de Materiales Peligrosos del Condado de San Diego, el Departamento de Salud del Condado de San Diego y SDG&E han monitoreado de cerca la calidad del aire en el área desde el inicio del incidente. El monitoreo atmosférico ha sido constante y la calidad del aire sigue siendo segura.

“Yesterday afternoon, safety and environmental crews responded to a fire at SDG&E’s battery storage facility in Escondido. The event was limited to one of 24 battery storage containers. There were no reported injuries.
“Due to the nature of the systems, industry standard is to allow the fire to burn out when it can be done safely and in a controlled environment. SDG&E will continue to work closely with fire officials until the storage container has been fully extinguished, which could take up to 48 hours.
“Along with the San Diego County Hazardous Materials Division, the San Diego County Health Department and the City of Escondido, SDG&E has been actively monitoring air quality at the site of the fire and in the evacuation area throughout the incident. Sampling locations and screening levels were identified under the guidance of the County and City Incident Coordinator, who have reviewed all results along with SDG&E and have determined that the air quality does not pose a health risk for those on site or in the evacuation area.
“Per Escondido Fire Department, the evacuation orders and warnings will remain in place as a precautionary measure until further notice.”

“Ayer por la tarde, los equipos de seguridad y medio ambiente respondieron a un incendio en las instalaciones de almacenamiento de baterías de SDG&E en Escondido. El evento se limitó a uno de los 24 contenedores de almacenamiento de baterías. No se reportaron heridos.
“Debido a la naturaleza de los sistemas, el estándar de la industria es permitir que el incendio se extinga cuando se pueda hacer de manera segura y en un entorno controlado. SDG&E seguirá trabajando en estrecha colaboración con los bomberos hasta que el contenedor de almacenamiento se haya extinguido por completo, lo que podría llevar hasta 48 horas.
“Junto con la División de Materiales Peligrosos del Condado de San Diego, el Departamento de Salud del Condado de San Diego y la Ciudad de Escondido, SDG&E ha estado monitoreando activamente la calidad del aire en el lugar del incendio y en el área de evacuación durante todo el incidente. Las ubicaciones de muestreo y los niveles de detección se identificaron bajo la guía del Coordinador de Incidentes del Condado y la Ciudad, quienes revisaron todos los resultados junto con SDG&E y determinaron que la calidad del aire no representa un riesgo para la salud de quienes se encuentran en el lugar o en el área de evacuación.

Escondido Battery Storage Incident

On September 5, 2024, safety crews responded to a fire at SDG&E’s battery storage facility in Escondido. Advanced fire suppression systems were activated immediately, and the event is limited to one of 24 battery storage containers. There are no reported injuries and emergency responders are on scene. SDG&E is working with first responders to ensure the safety of our employees and the community and will be conducting a thorough review of the event to determine the cause of the incident.
