Something awesome has been added to the South Chula Vista Library: a makerspace dubbed “Energy Station,” which provides hands-on learning experiences for students on all things energy-related.
When you visit the library next time, don’t be surprised if you see miniature wind turbines whirring and electric circuits being built.
“Energy Station” is the result of our collaboration with the Chula Vista Public Library, City of Chula Vista, Chula Vista Elementary School District, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
The goal of the project is to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM. Having a pipeline of future STEM workers is essential to the health and growth of our regional innovation economy, which depends on technical expertise in fields such as electrical engineering, biomedical research, and wireless communications.
Building Local Talent to Fill Local STEM Jobs
Tonight, Alex Kim, SDG&E’s director of customer programs, will join Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas and Laurie Humphrey, president of the CVESD Board, and representatives from IBEW and NECA to celebrate the “Energy Station” with a ribbon cutting.
Kim said that as an engineer, he is inspired by the effort to spur the growth of local talent in energy. Technologies in solar and wind, transportation electrification, along with smarter energy grids, and more efficient homes and businesses will improve lives and communities for generations to come, he said.
All sixth-grade students in Chula Vista will get the opportunity to participate in the hands-on activities offered at Energy Station. Students will be teamed up to work on wind and solar projects, and tasked with solving problems in clean energy, wind and solar power and energy storage.
More Information
The Energy Station makerspace was inspired by the Innovation Station, a partnership with the Chula Vista Public Library and SDG&E that opened in the Civic Center Branch in 2017.
