The Backbone of the Power Grid: Celebrating Our Lineworkers

Every year on April 18, we pause to recognize the dedication and courage of the people behind the power grid – our lineworkers. Lineworkers have the vital job of keeping our communities powered 24/7, often facing tough weather conditions and scaling great heights to build, maintain and repair electric infrastructure throughout our region.

Please join us in recognizing our lineworkers and learn more about some of them below.

“I enjoy doing linework and passing on knowledge to the next generation – hopefully on to my son in the near future. It is definitely rewarding getting the power back on for the customer.” - Donnie Jackson, Lineman, Northeast

“There are new challenges every day with our work. You could have the same job, but every pole is a different set up. You get to be creative and have to think for every job. Not only is our family relying on us, but our pole partner, and our community depend on us. I am proud to be a Journeyman Lineman.” - Dillon Potter, Lineman, Ramona

“I have had a long and successful career at SDG&E. I enjoy the hard work I have put into my career, the skills that this company has provided me, and the obstacles I have overcome to reach this point in my life. I enjoy the thrill of finding the fault and the peace of mind for doing my job well. I have also enjoyed teaching new relief fault finders and seeing their development. As I approach the final years of working with SDG&E, I can retire knowing that the future generations to come will continue developing people like myself and continue providing to the company and the community at large.” - Jose (J.J.) Munoz, Fault Finding Specialist, Orange County

“Electricity is an integral part of society’s infrastructure. It makes me smile to watch an apprentice having fun doing the job safely and efficiently. Only then do I know I’m doing my job correctly.” - Chris Simmons, Working Foreman, Beach Cities

“I enjoy passing on the trade. As a lineman, we are a special breed, and to pass that knowledge of the skill and commitment it takes to be a success in this trade is enjoyable to me. I love serving the community. I love working with the public and providing this service to them. We are first responders and people don’t realize that, but we are here to serve, and I enjoy solving people’s issues when we are out working.” - Billy Camarena, Working Foreman, North Coast

"What I enjoy most about my job is that I have the flexibility to work in a variety of skilled job positions, not just one area. As a lineman, you can work overhead or underground lines, distribution or transmission. When a person is exposed to so many aspects of the overall scope of a project rather than one small segment, they tend to take more pride and they find more desire to provide a better product for the community. What stands out to me most is that everything we construct, from generation, transmission, to distribution, are literally the building blocks of businesses, industry, cities, and communities. Future opportunities and growth rely on us.” - Mike Goldner, Fault Finding Specialist, Eastern

“My personal favorite aspects of being a lineman are working outdoors, working with my fellow brothers, and being able to provide a good life for my family. Also, I am a member of the mountain community and we as linemen play a critical role in ensuring that the community has reliable access to electricity. There is a great deal of pride that comes from knowing your work directly benefits the well-being of others especially in emergency situations.” - Troy Webster, Lineman, Mountain Empire

“What I enjoy the most about my job is the comradery amongst my peers and being able to do such important work while having fun. Every day is a different challenge. Improving and hardening our infrastructure and the gratitude we get from customers when we turn their power back on is very gratifying. One thing that stands out to me is the company's focus on safety and comfort and making sure that at the end of every day we all make it back home just as good or better than when we came in.” - David Martinez, Lineman, Electric Regional Operations Construction

“I love the brotherhood and comradery that comes along with this trade. It’s a good feeling knowing that I’m surrounded by like-minded, highly skilled individuals as we work the lines. I also truly enjoy knowing I’m a part of such a historic trade that goes back over 100 years. Sometimes it goes unnoticed, but at the end of the day, the world can thrive because of Journeyman Lineman working behind the scenes maintaining the electrical grid.” - Matthew Torres, Working Foreman, TCM - Kearny
