SDG&E’s private communications network helps keep communities safe

SDG&E recently launched a new private communications network solution that will help the company meet its goal of becoming America’s cleanest, safest and most reliable energy infrastructure company. The new communications network gives SDG&E the ability to share large amounts of data throughout its system at high speed, without interruption. The project, that began three years ago, is in its second year of deployment and will support advanced electric system protection technologies, specifically, falling conductor protection and high-speed relays. The expanded internal wireless network will also enable a more efficient communications system and has the ability to expand for future needs.

During times of high data traffic or system emergencies, important communications and system information will no longer need to wait in the data transfer queues of commercial carriers. This broadband solution will allow SDG&E to more efficiently leverage the network to support field operations with a single private communications network.
