Living in San Diego makes it easy to appreciate the beauty of nature. From La Jolla Cove, to Balboa Park, Torrey Pines, Sunset Cliffs, and more incredible local sights than we could mention, we’re surrounded with reminders of the importance of protecting our environment.
As San Diegans ourselves, we at SDG&E take this to heart. From having 45% renewable energy in our portfolio, to offering up to 100% renewable energy to customers through our EcoChoice program, to our work accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), to our partnerships with many environmentally focused, local nonprofits, we’re committed to doing our part to keep San Diego beautiful. This Earth Day, we’re seeing how when we take care of our environment, it takes care of us.
Several of our nonprofit partners, including Coastal Roots Farm, Produce Good, Olivewood Gardens, and Healthy Day Partners, grow food locally or support food distribution, most offering things like tours and nutrition and gardening education to families in their respective areas. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have adjusted their operations to ramp up food cultivation and distribution to families in need. Learn more about these organizations and their COVID-19 efforts here.
The American Lung Association releases an annual State of the Air report that reminds us that reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions not only benefits our environment but has a direct impact on our lung health. Since transportation is the largest contributor to GHGs in our state, we’re facilitating EV adoption through building infrastructure, helping companies make the switch to EVs for their medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles, and offering EV rate plans designed to make at-home charging affordable for residential EV drivers.
Our partners at organizations like I Love a Clean San Diego provide environmental education and organize volunteer events to clean up our beaches and parks, which protects vegetation and wildlife and keeps the places we love clean and beautiful.
While we may not be able to be out volunteering and celebrating Earth Day as we do traditionally, we believe wholeheartedly it's still important to take some time today to be grateful for our Earth, for San Diego, for these organizations who put so much into supporting our community, and for being a part of protecting the home we love.
