Flying into Fire: Regional Aviation Powers Wildfire Defense

As peak wildfire season approaches, SDG&E joins CAL FIRE and other regional public safety agencies to showcase San Diego’s aerial firefighting capabilities — a united front against the growing threat of catastrophic wildfires.

The event, held at SDG&E’s hangar at Gillespie Field in late August, highlights the critical role of aviation in wildfire response and the strength of regional collaboration. The fleet of 19 helicopters available for wildfire suppression this year includes SDG&E’s five aircraft, a cornerstone of year-round fire defense.

“Our aviation fleet, including two Blackhawk helicopters, is equipped to respond rapidly and effectively when wildfires strike. By working in close coordination with CAL FIRE and other emergency partners, we’re helping to protect lives, property and the resilience of our region against the growing threat of catastrophic wildfires,” says SDG&E President Scott Crider.

SDG&E operates a versatile fleet of helicopters, each playing a unique role in both utility operations and emergency wildfire response:

  • Two exclusive-use UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters
These aircraft are contracted for year-round rapid response dispatch by CAL FIRE. Each can fly up to 140 mph while carrying 1,000 gallons of water, refilling in just 45 seconds — making them ideal for fast, effective aerial suppression in rugged terrain.

  • Three utility helicopters
Primarily used for infrastructure inspection, maintenance, and construction support, these helicopters can be quickly repurposed for wildfire response. They are equipped to carry Bambi buckets or support helitack operations when needed, providing additional flexibility during emergencies.

Together, these assets form a dynamic aviation program that supports both SDG&E’s core mission of delivering safe, reliable energy and its commitment to wildfire safety.

"Year-round fire seasons demand an aerial response that’s fast, coordinated, and constantly evolving."

The event brings together CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, USDA Forest Service/Cleveland National Forest and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. These agencies deploy helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft capable of:

  • Rapid response and aerial suppression
  • Night-flying operations
  • Real-time reconnaissance and communication
  • Transporting firefighters and equipment into hard-to-reach areas

“Year-round fire seasons demand an aerial response that’s fast, coordinated, and constantly evolving,” says Deputy Chief Ryan Villarino. “From advanced helitankers and night-flying operations to upgrades at Ramona Air Attack Base, our shared commitment to innovation and collaboration is protecting lives, property, and the environment. This partnership is not just about fighting fires, it's about building resilience for San Diego County and beyond.”

As fire risk becomes more unpredictable, SDG&E continues to pursue technology, training and partnerships that strengthen the region’s wildfire defense. If wildfires strike, the company’s aviation program, from Blackhawks to drones, aids in helping San Diego be ready from the ground and the sky.
