Power restored to all customers impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoff

San Diego Gas & Electric today announced it has restored power to all customers affected by this week’s Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

The last three days brought our region extreme wildfire conditions and the strongest Santa Ana wind event in years, bringing wind speeds that approached and, in some cases, exceeded hurricane-strength levels

With the expiration of the National Weather Service's Red Flag Warning this morning at 4 a.m. and improvement in weather conditions, SDG&E has mobilized its field workforce to begin patrolling power lines and equipment impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in order to restore power to customers.

At sunrise, approximately 300 SDG&E field employees continued their work to patrol and inspect power lines on foot and by air to restore the approximately 46,500 customers who remained out of power as of Wednesday morning due to PSPS.

As the weather improved this afternoon, SDG&E crews were able to begin patrolling some select areas that were deenergized in order to begin the restoration process. Patrolling and restoration times will vary based on a number of factors, including the ability for crews to be able to inspect the lines safely.

Community Resource Centers remain open for impacted communities until power has been restored. These Centers are open to the public and equipped with resources including Wi-Fi, phone and medical device charging.

The second day of extreme wildfire conditions and strongest Santa Ana wind event in years brought wind speeds that approached and, in some cases, exceeding hurricane-strength levels, necessitating SDG&E to execute Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) across its service area to help reduce wildfire risk and protect public safety.

The strongest Santa Ana wind event of the season continued overnight and into Tuesday morning throughout the San Diego and southern Orange County region meriting additional overnight Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in certain communities to help reduce wildfire risk and protect public safety. Due to elevated fire weather conditions and Santa Ana winds, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has initiated Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in certain communities to help reduce wildfire risk and protect public safety. An up-to-date list of impacted communities can be found at sdge.com/ready.  SDG&E’s Emergency Operations Center is monitoring the high winds and severe wildfire conditions around the clock and will continue to de-energize equipment for safety as conditions warrant. Power will not be restored until conditions improve and no longer pose a threat to the infrastructure.

Due to extreme fire weather conditions and forecasted Santa Ana winds, San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) continues to monitor high-fire-risk conditions and has notified approximately 117,500 customers to prepare for a possible Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) as early as Monday afternoon. The communities potentially at risk of a PSPS include San Diego County’s mountain and backcountry areas and select northern coastal communities, as well as inland southern Orange County.

SDG&E on Saturday (12/7) notified approximately 115,000 customers that it may need to initiate Public Safety Power Shutoffs as early as Monday afternoon as a measure of last resort to reduce fire risk. These notifications were made via outbound dialer calls, text messages and emails.  

Everyone is encouraged to sign up to receive alerts from SDG&E at sdge.com/notifications and download the free Alerts by SDG&E app on Google Play or the App Store to get real-time updates and notifications about potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs. For up-to-date information on locations that may be potentially affected, please visit sdge.com/psps.  

We are reminding customers to always be aware of the potential for downed power lines due to the winds. Never touch a downed power line and assume that all electrical lines are energized all the time. Call 9-1-1 or SDG&E to report a downed power line.

Due to forecasted Santa Ana winds elevating wildfire risk in parts of Southern California, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for San Diego County Valleys and Mountains from Monday morning through Wednesday morning.

Peak wind gusts in San Diego backcountry areas are expected to be in the 50-60 mph range, with some isolated higher gusts in the typical wind-prone areas. Because power outages are more likely during windy conditions, we are encouraging customers to be prepared with flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-operated radio and a phone that doesn’t require electricity.  

Preparation is Key  

In response, we have activated our Emergency Operations Center and staffed it with key personnel like our Meteorology Team who are monitoring weather conditions throughout the duration of the event.  

We also want to remind customers to always be aware of the potential for downed power lines during high winds. If you see a downed power line, always assume it is energized and never touch the line or any other object in contact with it. Call 911 or SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 to report a downed power line.
